 # An Inside Look at the Layers of Your Siding System

Siding is more than what you see from the curb. Of course you want the color and materials that fit your style, neighborhood, and budget, but to find the best fit, you should also know the basics of how the whole siding system works.

While the panels on the outside are what immediately come to mind, they are only the outer shell of a system built to keep water, wind, and pests away from your home. Knowing what sits underneath can help you ask better questions during an estimate and recognize a quality [siding installation](https://aicroofing.com/wp-content/uploads/wp-mfa-exports/page/siding-installation-kentucky.md) when you see one.

 1## Sheathing: The Structural Base

Sheathing is the base layer of your siding installation. It is typically made of plywood or a material called oriented strand board (OSB). This layer is secured directly to the frame of your house. Sheathing provides a solid surface for all of the other layers to attach to.

As long as it stays dry, sheathing often lasts the full lifetime of your home. However, if moisture makes it to this deep layer, it can swell, rot, or mold. The layers above your sheathing keep it safe and dry. Part of our installation process at AIC Roofing & Construction is to thoroughly inspect any exposed sheathing and replace anything that is compromised before moving forward.

2## Keeping Dry With the Weather-Resistant Barrier (WRB)

To prevent moisture and pests from reaching your sheathing, the next layer in your siding installation is your weather-resistant barrier, often called house wrap. This material is designed to stop moisture from reaching the wall while still letting water vapor escape from inside. Breathability is key in a humid climate, since moisture trapped inside a wall can lead to issues even without an active leak.

Fully installed siding sheds most rain, but wind-driven water can slip behind the outer layers. House wrap is the layer that catches it and directs it back out. Proper installation means overlapping seams so upper sections lap over lower ones, then taping them so water always flows down and away.

3## Flashing Reinforces the Weak Spots

Windows, doors, and wall penetrations are high-risk points in any siding installation. To mitigate that risk, flashing is installed to seal the spaces and keep water away. [Kick-out flashing](https://aicroofing.com/wp-content/uploads/wp-mfa-exports/post/roof-flashing-explained.md), placed where a roof edge meets a sidewall, steers runoff into the gutter instead of down the wall.

Missing or poorly installed flashing is a frequent source of hidden wall damage. It is something we check for on every project.

4## Insulation Provides Comfort and Efficiency

Some siding systems include a layer of rigid foam insulation. This is either a layer of separate boards or part of the insulated vinyl panels. This layer helps keep outside temperatures, either hot or cold, from transferring into your home. It also gives the siding a firmer backing that helps panels resist dents from hail or nearby trees.

5## Siding Panels: The Part You Know Best

The last layer is the most familiar: the siding panels or cladding. The material you pick for your home will impact how long your siding lasts and the final look of your home exterior. Vinyl is a popular choice for its value and low upkeep, and fiber cement, such as [James Hardie siding](https://aicroofing.com/wp-content/uploads/wp-mfa-exports/post/james-hardie-siding-guide.md), offers strength and low maintenance with a crisp, modern look. If you’re still weighing materials, our overview of the [most common types of siding](https://aicroofing.com/wp-content/uploads/wp-mfa-exports/post/most-common-types-of-siding.md) is a helpful place to start.

Whatever material you choose, installation technique matters as much as the product itself. Panels need room to move, fasteners need correct placement, and every layer beneath them has to work together.

## Why the Whole System Matters

A siding system performs best when every layer is installed correctly and in the right order. Understanding the layers of your siding project can help empower you to make an informed decision on the best materials and installation for your home.

AIC approaches every siding project as a complete system. Regular checkups help too, and our [exterior home maintenance guide](https://aicroofing.com/wp-content/uploads/wp-mfa-exports/post/exterior-home-maintenance-guide.md) walks through what to look for each season.
