The roofing warranty that comes with a new roof isn’t universal. Some warranties are pro-rated while others only cover a certain aspect of the roof, such as labor and materials. Similarly, the criteria that outlines what voids a warranty may vary, but there are some common reasons why such a claim may be rejected.

3 Reasons Your Warranty Claim May Be Rejected

AIC Roofing and Construction lists three reasons your roof warranty claim may not go through:

1. Improper Ventilation

Although home ventilation is responsible for regulating your property’s comfort levels, it also regulates the health of your roof’s shingles. Without proper ventilation, your shingles will accrue moisture damage in summer or dry out and become brittle in winter. Lack of proper ventilation can void your roof warranty claim; the problem will be classified as a lack of ongoing roofing maintenance.

2. Improper Installation

Improper installation negatively affects the long-term performance of your roof. Since the problems often manifest late in the roof’s service life, the warranty often won’t cover it any longer. Fortunately, some roofing warranties do offer coverage for improper installation.

As your local GAF Master Elite® roofing contractor we can offer their Golden Pledge® Limited Warranty. It features full workmanship coverage for 25 years and 100% material coverage for 50 years.

3. Pressure Washing Your Roofs

Most homeowners choose to pressure-wash their roofs to get rid of moss. Doing so, however, voids the warranty of the roofing system since shingles aren’t designed to withstand close-range pressure-washing, which strips the shingles of their protective roofing granules. The best way to address moss is to simply install metallic zinc strips at the roof’s peak. When it rains, zinc runoff, which is poisonous to moss, will remove it naturally.
